The consultation

This is an opportunity to fully discuss your health challenge. To give you the optimum treatment it is necessary to find out about your health history and habits.  I will also palpate your pulse and look at your tongue, both which gives me a strong indication where any imbalance lies.  If you have a muscular/ skeletal problem I will examine this.  Once I have all the information required I will create a treatment plan.  Our conversation should take about 45 minutes.

What treatment techniques do you do & how do they feel?

Massage therapy has formed an integral part of most of the ancient civilizations of the world.  It plays an especially important role in Oriental medicine and medical texts as far back as 722 BC record various massage techniques that were used back then.

I use a combination of Tuina massage and Swedish massage.  This relaxes and stimulates important acupoints located alongside your spine, encouraging your own healing energy to invigorate and nourish your inner organs.

Additionally massage improves circulation and improves the ability to heal any tears or knots in your muscles.

Cupping is a lesser-known treatment that is also part of Oriental medicine.  Small glass cups are placed on the skin.  The suction in the cups causes the skin and superficial muscle layer to be lightly drawn into the cup.  Cupping is much like the inverse of massage - rather than applying pressure to muscles, it uses gentle pressure to pull them upward. For most patients, this is a particularly relaxing and relieving sensation.  Once suctioned, the cups are generally left in place for about ten minutes while the patient relaxes.

The suction and pressure provided by cupping can loosen muscles, encourage blood flow, and sedate the nervous system (which makes it an excellent treatment for high blood pressure).  Cupping is used to relieve back and neck pains, stiff muscles, anxiety, fatigue, migraines, rheumatism, and even cellulite.  For weight loss and cellulite treatments, oil is first applied to the skin, and then the cups are moved up and down the surrounding area.

Cupping is one of the best deep-tissue therapies available.  It is thought to affect tissues up to four inches deep from the external skin and is a very beneficial, yet simple treatment.

Gua Sha

The area to be Gua Sha-ed is lubricated with oil. The skin is then rubbed with a round-edged instrument in downward strokes. One area is stroked until the petechiae that surface are completely raised.

Gua Sha is used whenever a patient has pain whether associated with an acute or chronic disorder. . There may be aching, tenderness and/or a knotty feeling in the muscles.  In addition to resolving musculo skeletal pain, Gua Sha is used to treat as well as prevent common cold, flu, bronchitis, asthma, as well as any chronic disorder involving pain, congestion of Qi and Blood.

In most cases the patient feels an immediate shift in their condition particularly in their pain or sense of constraint.

Acupuncture can help almost any condition.  It is the main technique used in Oriental medicine and its benefits are boundless.  Acupoints are selected according to an individuals diagnosis.  When the needles are inserted through a sterilised tube often nothing much is felt at all.  Once the needle is in place it is carefully manipulated so the sensation of 'Dei qi' is reached.  'Dei Qi' is very important and signifies that the patients natural healing ability has been activated, and this is when the healing begins.  This sensation has been described as 'a small ache', 'a tingling' or a 'sensation of heat'.  This lasts for a couple of seconds and is replaced with a strong feeling of relaxation as your body heals itself naturally.  The needles can be left for ten to twenty minutes whilst you relax to gentle music.

How does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture is a tool to activate your own medicine that you have inside your own body. ~One example is inserting a pin in an acupoint near an area that is painful activates your own anti-inflammatory response, sending medicine to the area to speed up healing.
Many health challenges are subject to tipping points where just a little boost will help the body get the upper hand to a problem.

Acu causes production of endorphins
Improves blood flow
Stimulates the limbic system of the brain
Activates key brain regulatory centres
Stimulates neuro-transmitters
Balances Qi (energy)
Frees up blocked Qi (energy)

The most important thing I need to explain to you is that acupuncture works by helping the body to get more out of its own natural healing resources. Our bodies produce a wide range of natural pain relieving substances, natural anti-inflammatory chemistry, hormones, immune system enhancers, and so forth, all without the need for outside drugs. In fact, some of our most effective drugs are man made synthetic copies of the chemistry our body makes naturally, like cortisone. In modern medicine we make the mistake of assuming that when a problem lingers and is not healed right away by our own healing resources, this must mean it is beyond our body’s ability to heal. We then look to bring-in outside resources like drugs or surgery to address the problem. The fact is though, just because a problem is not healed right away by our internal resources does not necessarily mean it is beyond those resources. We don’t always get 100% from our own self healing abilities anymore than we get 100% out of our brain’s resources or our muscles resources. Acupuncture helps us squeeze more out of our natural ability to heal ourselves - to get us closer to 100% of our full potential.

Your body has been trying to heal your problem but has not yet been able to get the upper hand on it. A good course of acupuncture treatment - done by someone well trained in Traditional Chinese Acupuncture should always be able to help improve someone’s health condition.

What happens afterwards?

Everyone feels different, some patients report feeling sleepy whilst others feel extremely energetic.  Some patients feel effects similar to detoxing.  Sometimes the health complaint often improves a day or two after the treatment, whilst other patients report relief immediately.
